The use of FOAMGLAS® for Internal Wall Applications

FOAMGLAS® Cellular Glass Insulation is impervious to water and water vapour and when installed on the inside of basement walls establishes an environment of comfortable temperature and humidity within buildings. As FOAMGLAS® insulation forms a vapour barrier within the body of the structure it prevents the “wall effect”, a disorder caused by condensation or vapour diffusion affecting part of a wall or its surface. Damage associated with moisture, mildew and the growth of microscopic plants (algae, lichens, parasitic fungi) can be prevented. FOAMGLAS® insulation can be regarded as a treatment for the prevention of spore forming growths.
 
FOAMGLAS® insulation is suitable for internal insulation for refurbishment projects and new building; it can be used with many finishes such as thin renderings, rendering basecoats, ceramic finishes, plasterboard, Fermacell or wooden panelling placed in front of incompressible insulation. Depending on the nature of the finishing and the purpose of the space; FOAMGLAS® slabs and boards can be installed on load-bearing walls using PC anchoring plates, or alternatively they can be adhesively bonded using the appropriate accessory materials.

FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation can be used inside a concrete outer shell as a secondary waterproofing layer to prevent a fall in temperature below the dew point on the interior face, prevent excessive heat loss (which could result in an increase in operation costs) and reduce uncontrolled water vapour migration.
 
A basement store for the new Government archives of Thuringia in Weimar’s Marstall, which is located close to the Ilm River in Germany, used FOAMGLAS® insulation to control the heat loss and provide a secondary water resistant envelope on the inside of the structure. The water table is just 2.6 metres below ground level.
 
FOAMGLAS® Wallboard was applied using PC56 applied to the reverse and edges to seal the joints and FOAMGLAS® floor insulation S3 slab, bedded in hot bitumen on the basement floor to form a complete water tight insulation envelope.
 
The FOAMGLAS® insulation was used in conjunction with a specialist tanking system. Tanking is the technical terminology for a waterproof skin, which in this case comprised of three coats of asphalt applied to the outside of a basement. A frequently used alternative is “tanking concrete” or “waterproof concrete” which is in contrast to the use of asphalt or bituminous waterproofing.
 
The advantages of tanking concrete are no mechanical protection is needed on the outside as it is with asphalt : is load bearing : adopts the role of waterproofing : is ideal for ground water conditions due to the advanced material technology and the way it is applied.
