Room for A Basement?

Reprint of two articles published in Homebuilding & Renovating and written by Mark Brinkley.

The first article "Room for a basement" touches on the history of basements in the UK and in other countries, and covers some design issues. It also gives three cases studies where the basement is used as a Gym, a Bedsit and a Games room.

The second article "The rise of the basments" gives a further five case studies. The first is a retro fit basement added to an existing semi-detached property. The other four show different uses and construction methods.
